  1. This is just one of those weird things I can’t explain in kdramaland. O_____O Why are JGS dramas not popular??? WHY???

The only possible explanation is that there’s a law forbidding JGS dramas from getting high ratings.

  2. OMG!! I just wrote about him on my blog!! That’s so funny!! Day 19 of the 30 Day Kdrama Challenge was “Who do you think is the best actor?” I chose to write about him and Gong Yoo. I wrote on there that despite the fact that I have not been overly crazy about most of the dramas he chooses, I have always been impressed by him. Even if the drama is terrible, his acting always stands out. I think he has major potential as an actor and he’s got a beautiful voice. He just needs to pick his dramas more carefully. I am just waiting on him to pick something amazing and really show off his skills!!

    1. I know right? I don’t think it’s his poor choice of projects though. You’re Beautiful was by the Hong Sisters, so I expected it to get at least 5th in ratings but it just hovered around 10th place.
Let’s just chalk it up to JGS jinx. πŸ˜›

      1. You’re Beautiful was just okay for me, though I know a lot of people love it. I would just like to see him do something really challenging because I think he could be amazing. I recently watched Love Rain, and it was cute, but it was another kind of safe and on the boring side drama. I’d just like to see him take a big risk, especially with him, being kind of edgy looking. He’s super popular in Japan though right?

        1. Yep, he is very famous in Japan.
I wonder what kind of role will be unusual for JGS. He already played a slave in his movie with Kim Haneul. A cop with musical abilities in Beethoven Virus, a teenage-dad in Baby and Me… he was also a prince-on-a-revenge-mission in Hong Gil Dong. :/

The kdrama landscape is just too plain and boring. Perhaps he should try a cable drama or a movie for something different. (Or, y’know, you can cast him in your If ____ were a kdrama)

        2. I have not seen all of those except Beethoven Virus, which he was still a musician who originally had a dead beat attitude and then comes around. He plays that role a lot lol, he plays it well, but a lot. All the dramas I’ve seen him in he was type casted as the musician/artist with a bad attitude who eventually comes around and falls in love with the girl and learns to be a human being lol. But he is always fantastic and I have always thought he gave each of his characters their own flare and makes a really great emotional connection as well.

It’s funny you say that because I was discussing with someone on koala’s blog that I wanted to cast him as Spike because he does edgy well and then he could be play good, evil, and a smart ass lol. But they were hating on him and said I shouldn’t cast him as Spike, but I’m going to anyway lol.

        3. I sort of saw that thread but couldn’t keep up with the Buffy references. πŸ™‚ It’s your blog post series, you can do what you want!

        4. Yeah that’s what I say lol. I just needed help with Angel but they were all over the whole cast lol. But ultimitely, I’m going to do what I want ha ha.

  3. It actually kinda makes sense, Jang Geun Seuk is much more popular overseas than he is in Korea itself, and weirdly his status as a top actor (loads of talent aside) is fuelled by the fact he’s really popular in Japan and a ‘hallyu’ star. As far as I can tell, a lot of Koreans don’t “get” Jang Geun Seuk.

      1. I think JGS is really talented as an actor, and I think people recognise that, but he’s also not a “personality” like LSG is- or a personality that Koreans want to love anyway.

Haha, it’s funny you mention LSG- because I used to be confused about him as well- my oldest sister and my mother both really liked him, and I was always like, huh? Him? Why? Until I got hooked on old episodes of 1n2d! I’ve decided LSG is a robot programmed with adorable flaws to make him more loveable. I suppose you receive a lot of love when you appear every week for years on a very beloved program.

If JGS had an opportunity (or wanted the opportunity) to appear on variety shows more regularly, maybe he’d get the same kind of love, but I think his image is otherwise too weird for Koreans- too feminine (I know it sounds weird), too oddball.

        1. Ah.. so there *is* such a thing as being too weird/4D. I thought weird people always are adorable for variety.

(PS I found him very feminine recently too. Don’t know what’s up with his stylist/shampoo expert.)

    1. Oh hell no, have you been to Korea? JGS is FREAKING EVERYWHERE!!! He is talented but I think his dramas ain’t all that. You’re Beautiful was just pure mediocre that is enjoyed by everyone else who likes corny stuff #Queen In Hyun’s Man lol

      1. Yeah, I’ve been to Korea and I’m Korean, and I have Korean friends. I’m not saying he’s not a huge celebrity, of course he is. But quite a bit of that popularity is based on admiration for his success overseas, and if you speak to people on the street, like “What’s the deal with JGS?”, there’s a really big chance their answer will be “He’s big in Japan”. I don’t think he gets the same level of affection from the Korean public like as Mary said, an Lee Seunggi or Jang Dong Gun.

  4. I LOVE JANG KEUNSUK!!!!<3 I love his recent drama, Love Rain, the most! That is one got me into kdrama world…Love Rain was just amazing! You're Beautiful was good, but it didn't get me hooked :/ I gave up on it but after watching him in Love Rain, I rewatched it again and enjoyed πŸ˜€
Love Rain didn't get high ratings, but I think it's a great show. Actually I think the reason why most people stopped watching it is because of the first 4 episodes – there's alot of controversy around them. Some either love it cuz it's unique, pure and sweet or some hate it because they find it boring. It was alright for me, I won't say I loved the 1970s era, but once it reach episode 5(2012s era), it is PURE AMAZING! YOONA AND JANG KEUNSUK ARE FREAKING CUTE TGT AND HAVE SO MUCH CHEMISTRY!!<3 I know there are people who really loved the 1970s era, but I actually think if the director have cut off that part or shortened it to like one episode, the drama would have done MUCH BETTER. After all, the story in the 1970s was pretty simple, somewhat the backbone of the drama. I think the director meant for it to be spectacular though, but it wasn't. In most dramas, when there is a Joseon era part and modert part, the Joseon era part is usually just one, or at most two episodes. For example, Rooftop Prince and Shark(I think I miss you too…?) That's why they did well! I think if Love Rain's 1970s part was only an episode, the drama would have done fantastic. Really. And Love Rain is really unique though, in most of his dramas, JKS starred as either a musician(Beethoven Virus, You're Beautiful, Mary Stayed Out All Night) or in an ancient drama(Hong Gil Dong, Hwang Jini). In Love Rain, he was photographer and artist!! How cool is that πŸ˜„

Anyway, he is the best actor ever to me too, AND THE BEST SINGER EVER! HIS VOICE MELTS MY HEART, REALLY! I think it's unfair to measure the quality of a drama by looking at it's ratings on TV, cuz in the first place, there are MANY MANY more people who watch dramas online or buy the cds. Just because not many people watch it on tv doesn't mean it is good or popular. Love Rain is very popular overseas and internationally rather than in korea, same goes for his other shows!

    1. Haha your energy reminds me of You’re Beautiful days. I was obsessed with JGS too and stalked his dramas and projects and CFs. I watched Hong Gil Dong and *tried* Beethoven Virus because of him!

Yes yes he has a deep melty voice, at least that will never change. πŸ™‚

I’m on ep4 of Love Rain and I find it ok so far. Though I already know that the older generation would have a sad ending so I’m also excited to jump to the kiddos part.
